Sickle Cell E-Learning Course Aims to Improve Care in the UK

In a much needed step toward improving care for people living with Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD), a new free sickle cell e-learning course has been launched for healthcare professionals across the UK. The SCD National Education Programme has been developed by a dedicated Sickle Cell committee that I am proudly connected with (The Red Cell Network). This initiative is aimed at addressing the long-standing gaps in understanding and treatment of this the sickle cell blood disorder.

Sickle Cell patients across the UK have, for decades, faced serious disparities in healthcare, often being mistreated, or dismissed due to a widespread lack of education about the condition. I’ve personally experienced this, and I know many others who have suffered needlessly because of it. There is also a significant amount of stigma around the condition that can make getting the right pain treatment difficult.

This is why the SCD National Education Programme was created, to equip carers, nurses, and social workers with the essential knowledge and tools to provide better, more empathetic care to those with sickle cell. The e-learning modules are short, digestible, and designed to fit easily into the schedules of busy healthcare professionals. Best of all, they’re completely free to access via the NHS Learning Hub.
